UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of intriguing future games, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a girl harboring multiple personalities within her must escape from a maze of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Within her reside four separate personas, each with unique fears and motivations. These entities can seize control at will, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, while additional clips depict the main character exploring a desolate church.
A World of Individual Dread
"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to other people can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that idea β fears that are unique to every individual."
The core mechanic revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these identities will switch against your will during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's fears become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Choice
At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by nurses who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the waiting room have large flowers where their heads are. Flowers are a recurring element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls claims that the physical form belongs to them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can deceive or hide the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The last one standing could be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
