Both Deceased Students Named in the Providence Campus Incident as Police Continue Manhunt for Killer.
Two students who were killed in the weekend's tragic incident on the university campus had tributes paid to them on Monday – as a manhunt for their assailant continued following the freeing by local law enforcement of the single suspect detained in connection in the case.
Honoring a Lost Student
Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was described as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, according to the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which offered condolences for her at a ceremony on Sunday.
She served as the vice-presidency of Brown’s division of the College Republicans organization, the group said. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also shared condolences online, stating: “Words cannot express. Keeping in mind her kin and peers, above all her mom and dad.”
The Second Victim
The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his first year of studies at the prestigious university, according to relatives.
His name was verified by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.
“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. His ambitions were lofty of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and helping people,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a online post.
Details of the Attack
An additional nine individuals were wounded in the weekend shooting in the engineering building of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.
Officials stated late Sunday that a 24-year-man taken into custody in a police operation at a Hampton Inn about approximately 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was set to be freed.
“A perpetrator remains free,” declared the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.
He continued, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you have to regroup and pursue a different angle, and that is the current situation over the last 24 hours or so.”
Community Anxiety
The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, noted: “This will probably generate new worry for our community”.
The gunman began shooting inside a room in the building on Saturday afternoon, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a 9mm pistol, a police source informed the news agency.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by the passing of Umurzokov in a message. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to his relatives, loved ones, and peers and lament the passing of his promising future.”

Saturday’s killings at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US university with about thousands of bachelor's and postgraduate students, happened during one of at least nearly 400 mass shootings reported in the US so far in the current year, according to data.
